Hi there, I'm Angela,
an artist from Inverness, Scotland.
Nature is an endless source of inspiration to me. From stormy skies to wild seas, from rugged hills to fluffy bog cotton, from intricate ferns to the carpet of fallen blossom leaves, beauty is all around.
Whilst I have always been happiest in nature, in the woods or beside the sea, events of recent years have really reinforced just how vital it is to me. The dramatic landscapes of the Highlands and Islands never fail to inspire me. As I walk more mindfully, I home in on patterns in nature and I am drawn to bring these patterns into my home. I enjoy experimenting with a variety of mediums including watercolour, ink, acrylic cyanotype and embroidery.
Wee Norrag has been my creative outlet since 2012 following the birth of my son. I would work with textiles, primarily Harris Tweed, much of which was woven by my father-in-law on the Isle of Lewis, to create gifts and homewares whilst my son had his afternoon nap. I named my business Wee Norrag as norrag is the Gaelic word for a wee snooze. Wee Norrag has ebbed and flowed over the years as our family grew and as work commitments have changed but it has been an important constant to me.
I have worked in Gaelic medium primary education for almost 20 years, and sometimes a particular flower or scene brings to mind a Gaelic proverb or song lyric, and I like include that in my artwork. In my most recent collection, ‘Ag èirigh’, all of the artworks have been given Gaelic names in the first instance and an English equivalent.
My recent work aims to bring the outside in, bringing the patterns from nature into peoples’ homes, to remind us of the often overlooked beauty and energy that surrounds us in nature.
